A significant gold deposit was recently discovered in the rural area of the municipality of Currais, in southern Piauí, and could transform the region's economic reality. Located in the Gurgueia Valley, the 1,984-hectare area presented an impressive grade of 89.62 grams of gold per ton of ore—a value four times higher than what is considered an "excellent grade" in mining. This exceptional concentration reinforces the mineral potential of Piauí, a state already home to significant reserves of diamonds, nickel, and cobalt.

 

Based on projections that consider an average depth of two meters and a soil density of two tons per cubic meter, the deposit is estimated to contain approximately 7,108 tons of gold. With the current price of R$591.33 per gram, the deposit's potential gross value exceeds R$4.2 trillion, a figure that highlights the discovery's billion-dollar value and the transformative impact it could have on the municipality and the entire southern region of the state.

 

The owner of the area, Luiz Rodrigues Filho, a former councilman of Bom Jesus, already has a research permit authorized by the National Mining Agency (ANM), officially published in the Federal Official Gazette. With the support of security forces to protect the deposit, the next steps involve technical surveys and economic and environmental feasibility analyses. If exploration is confirmed, Currais could emerge as one of the country's main mining hubs, generating jobs, attracting investment, and stimulating regional development in a strategic and sustainable manner.
