When a Dredge Pump is required

17 of july of 2020
Find out what are the most common applications for dredge pumps and how they help with daily service around the world.
What is a dredge pump?

Dredge type pumps are pumps that in addition to suction water and liquids in general, also support the dredging of solid materials in the total handled.

How are dredge pumps built?

These pumps have as a striking feature the fact that they are manufactured with more robust materials, usually in cast iron, to withstand a little better the impact and abrasion that the passage of solid materials cause inside the pump.

Although there are several manufacturers of dredge pumps on the world market, the pumps follow a classic manufacturing pattern, with more or less technology inserted in the manufacturing methods. Their high weight, largely due to the manufacturing metal alloys, are another very common feature in dredge pumps, which usually have nozzle dimensions greater than 3 inches and weight not less than 60 KG, in the smallest models.

This robustness is necessary because when a pump starts to dredge solid materials, the pump bowl / snail / cover, as well as the rotor, suffer a lot of wear due to contact with the solids.

What materials can I suck with a dredge pump?

In sand dredging, for example, the material's required resistance is against abrasion. Metal alloys with a higher concentration of manganese, chromium and nickel guarantee this resistance.

In the case of dredging pebbles, gravel or stones in general, the demand for resistance is against impact. Steel metallic alloys have the best resistance to stone dredging.

For all other materials, which do not have sand abrasiveness and the impact of stones, it is recommended to use a common metallic alloy of cast white iron, which in general terms is the best cost-effective choice for dredging mud, organic compounds , chemical compounds (non-corrosive) and many others.

What are the main activities that require the use of a dredge pump?

Specific jobs may require the use of specific equipment, below are some examples of services and sectors that are already used or could use dredge pumps for everyday use;

- Suction of liquids and solids in dams, water reservoirs, dams and lakes for the purpose of cleaning the draft.

- Suction of liquids and solids in washing and draining animal waste in agricultural activities.

- Water injection in well drilling systems.

- Washing and handling of water for fresh produce.

- Supply of irrigation systems in agriculture.

- Drainage in sewage (wastewater / wastewater), residential or industrial.

- Drainage in rainwater and river drainage in urban or rural projects.

- Extraction of sand and pebbles in mining and mining.
